Does my motorcycle exhaust need baffles?

i bought a fixer-upper and the exhaust is rusted. I want to cut it off halfway and just attach some raw pipe to the old exhaust for some cheap pipes. I cant afford new ones. Will this work? If i need baffles how can i make new ones?

You don’t NEED baffles they just quiet down the bike and provide back pressure so that the engine can be choked down enough to be tuned to epa standards that’s why you see that performance tuned pipes and bikes are not approved by the epa. you can leave your pipe a straight but its gonna be loud as hell and you will have to re-tune the bike to compensate for the extra flow you will be getting from a straight pipe.

  1. depending on how big the pipe you use is washers work for backpressure but it will still be loud as f***

  2. Some of the after market exhaust companies make removable baffles. Check Cobra, for instance.
Altering the exhaust without re-jetting the carb usually causes the engine to run hot and perform poorly. If the stock item isn’t rusted through you may just want to coat it with OSPHO (rust killer) and run "as is".

  3. Baffles can be found cheap.
    Example: http://www.jcwhitney.com/INTERNAL_BAFFLES?ID=12;0;0;0;100003;ProductName;0;0;0;N;2006266;0;0
They are in most aftermarket parts catalogs.

  5. Be careful when you slice of the pipe you don’t cut into the power band and wreck it.
